Comfort Socks and the Care Bears Connect

Say hello to our newest friends, the Care Bears. The Care Bears is a group of five 7th grade students from San Diego, CA. As part of their humanities school project, these fine young people have chosen to help the homeless in Downtown San Diego by providing them with care packages. Back in Feb, the group contacted Comfort Socks with some questions – and after a few email exchanges – it became clear to me that the heart of these young people will be a great comfort to those they touch. And it is the desire of Comfort Socks to show the world what some effort with good-spirited heart can do. We are grateful to know the Care Bears and appreciate that they have let us share their story with our Comfort Socks family.

So far, the Care Bears have planned out the contents of their care bags, and are working on ways to purchase or receive donations of the care bag items themselves. The Care Bear members have put up collection bins, are in the process of asking Target about a sponsorship, are planning on holding a night at one of the local restaurants in their community where a percentage of the bill goes to their project. They have accomplished getting their local elementary schools involved and with students making a cheerful pieces of artwork with something inspiring written on, and cards of hope, sure to brighten the day of those who receive a care bags from the Care Bears group. I know one thing for sure, the Care Bears have brightened my day, just by seeing their caring works in action. Keep up the great work, Care Bears, and perhaps in the future we may hear of you joining the Comfort Socks family of sock collectors.

The Lemon Crew is made up of kids like you across America who are collecting new CREW SOCKS for Comfort Socks, a 501(c)3 public charity that provides new socks to homeless shelters.

There are so many easy ways Lemon Crew members can collect socks for Comfort Socks.

Decorate your Lemonade Stand with socks, making it a “Sock Stand”.

Use your creative genius and create a “sock” puppet show.” Attendees can donate socks in lieu of a ticket to see your show. You can also provide lemonade as a refreshment.

Collect Lemon Crew Socks outside of a local store.

Play any sports? Ask the spectators to bring a package of Lemon Crew Socks to one of your games. You can even set up a lemonade stand and collect socks.

Comfort Socks has received so many requests for socks. More than ever before - But we are not discouraged, we are confident in our supporters - we believe in You.

SOLE is a Canadian-based company established in 2000, with the launch of our first Custom Footbed. Our goal was to develop a superior footbed, at a price anyone could afford. We just boxed up over 300 pairs of socks to help their Boston, MA location. We ourselves, are comforted to know that the comfort and warmth we strive to provide, will be felt by these kids on the streets of Boston, especially now that soon the colder weather will be upon us.

Are your feet warm and dry? So many people in our country are too scared, ashamed or wounded in their heart and spirit to sleep in a homeless shelter at night. Even during the summer months, socks are so important. They keep the insects away and provide warmth. We are after the comfort a new pair of socks can bring to someone.

Many people have pledged to send socks, and they really mean to, but sometimes the mission is not completed.

Please help us do our work. The requests are coming in from the shelters, and we are working very hard to keep our inventory flowing.

Please contact me directly if you have any questions. Every single pair of socks matters, so please, socks are small thing, but they really do make a big difference to the person's feet who would otherwise be cold and wet.

If you collect socks, email me for the delivery address.

If you would like to donate, every dollar helps 2 people.

The King and the Bride

Comfort Socks is always impressed when young people step forward to make a difference in the world. But last Saturday evening, at St. Peter the Fisherman church in Wilmington, NC, the performances of the King and the Bride far surpassed what we expected (sort of like our Lord's blessing to us - always better than we can imagine).

What has this show got to with Socks, you may ask? Well, Comfort Socks applauds these young men and women, who took so much of their time and themselves to share the story of Christ returning for His church set in contemporary time. We are proud to be in relationship with the youth of America in any positive of expression of God's goodness, kindness, and love.

The screenplay was written simply but powerfully. The story takes place in modern day America and starts with a young boy pretending to be sick so he didn't have to go to school. A concerned uncle learns while visiting with the boy, that he is confused as to the angry reaction of a school mate. The uncle proceeds to tell the story of Sams undying love for Lucy, an angry and bitter, feeling very abandoned and worthless young woman

The story reveals the truth of God's love for us, and His many attempts to show His love through His grace, understanding, and hopes in our lives.

I was so touched by the story, and thrilled to learn that the music was original and written especially for the show by William, the young man who played Sam (one of the lead characters). The props and set was well thought out. All the actors did a unbelievable job, but the performances of William (Sam) and Casey (Lucy) really touched our hearts.

Would like to mention that we were invited to the performance by Deacon David Hueholt of St. Peter the Fisherman church, who receives socks from us to support their Early Bread Program. The Early Bread program gives socks on Sunday Mornings to the Wilmington, NC area homeless along with breakfast and encouragement. After the performance, we were excited to learn that William, who played Sam in the show, was David's son. William and Casey- Bravo for an excellent performance.

The consensus is that the Lord is not quite done with this great show - so we will watch expectantly for the next performance.

Comfort Socks Loves the Good Life Paper

The Good Life Papers is an amazing testimony. One day, while vacationing in the mountains, a Good Life Paper found it's way into the hands of Leslie Averitt. She felt so inspired, and could not put it down. After contacting the publisher, Leslie knew this was the path for her, so she worked out the details, and her first issue of the Good Life Paper was ready in Oct 2005, just 6 weeks after meeting with the publisher.

Leslie lets the Lord lead her each month, so it is no wonder that many find exactly what they need when they read it. She is an inspiration, trusting that it all will come together each and every month, and it always does. Faith leads to the blessing of faithfulness from our Father.

Thank you, Leslie, for being such an inspiration to me and to so many others, and for creating a way to spread the Good Life - through printed word and through your spirit, faith and dedication, and yes, some very long hours.

Supported by donations, prayers and advertising dollars, the Good Life Paper will celebrate it's 5 year anniversary this summer. Leslie has help from a dedicated graphic artist, Manon, who does a wonderful job.

We found through further communication with Oceangate, that they are producing a documentary called "Land of Liberty".

"Land Of Liberty" is a seventy-ninety minute documentary on homelessness in the United States. It will cover locations in Martinsburg, WV, Baltimore Md., Washington, D.C. , Los Angeles, and New York City. This compassionate film will follow three main characters through various stages of homelessness.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with Oceangate and their projects. It is obvious their efforts are geared to help those hurting, lost and misplaced. Please do all you can to encourage their work.

Comfort Socks loves Hope Mill, Inc.

One of the most wonderful Blessings Comfort Socks has received, is the gift of meeting those who have a heart to help others. The Founder of HopeMill, Inc, Pearl Huber, is one such blessing. Pearl and I met online when she sent an email requesting socks for her non-profit organization.

As I became familiar with HopeMill's purpose, the true feeling of Hope became apparent, for those lost and living on the streets. HopeMill creates backpacks full of well thought out items that homeless individuals value and require to survive (one of the most items, of course, is SOCKS).

Hope Mill says "Can you imagine what it would feel like to have no place to call home? Unfortunately, millions of American men, women and children know this feeling all too well.When a person is homeless, simple things that many of us take for granted are beyond reach. Basic things - like something to eat and drink, a change of clothes, a warm scarf, a pillow to rest their head on at night, and basic personal care products. Even finding storage for what belongings they do have can be difficult, since they must be able to carry their things with them.

Who is homeless?

    * Older adults (over 62)
    * Families with young children
    * Teens
    * Veterans
    * Young men and women

      Virtually very segment of society is affected!

A typical Hope Mill CarePack includes:

Bottled water or juice, and non-perishable food items such as cheese & crackers, tuna or chicken salad kits, fruit snacks, beef jerky, fruit cups or applesauce, cookies, etc. Also included are personal care items such as soap and washcloth, shampoo, disposable razor, deodorant, shaving cream, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, individual packs of laundry soap, tissues, chap stick, hairbrush, anti-bacterial wipes, band aids, a new pair of socks, a t-shirt or fleece scarf, two stamped envelopes along with a pen and notepad and a couple of inspirational and comforting Bible verses.

The Kids Paks contain, in addition to many of the items above, a few child specific items - such as a coloring book and crayons, and a small stuffed animal or toy.

“With in-kind donations, it is easy for people to overlook and take for granted basic needs like socks,” stated Clara Braddock, Salvation Army Harbor Lights Center in Minneapolis. She continued, “New, clean socks are highly valued by our clients and we just don’t always have enough for everyone.”

Operation Warm Feet is one of the first programs of its kind to connect socks and other in-kind donations directly to shelters in a fully customized online environment.
“We wanted to simplify the in-kind donation process and make it easier for donors to respond to urgent needs of local charities,” said Jennifer Katz, CEO of AOI Marketing. She continued, “Now, with a few clicks through the

Operation Warm Feet website, anyone can donate and feel confident that the socks and other items they send will be delivered directly to the shelter of their choice.”

At launch, Operation Warm Feet has the support of fifteen homeless shelters. Most supporting shelters are based in Minnesota. Donors simply select the shelter of their choice and purchase socks.

“Because nearly sixty percent of our guests are children, we always have a need for the basics like socks and diapers. As an Operation Warm Feet partner, it’ll be easier for us to fulfill these needs and allocate more resources to families who need help,” said Amy Jenkins, Director of Development at People Serving People in Minneapolis.

Comfort Socks was contacted by a local womens group, who get together and do numerous events for the good of the community. Comfort Socks was blessed to be a part of that, when we learned that 160 pairs of socks have been collected for our mission.

Sunset Beach Community Church donates 375 pairs of Socks

Thank you Sunset Beach Community Church for your partnership in December.
From the moment I met Pastor Richard Farrand, I knew there existed a special leadership quality that would yield wonderful results. Pastor Farrand went the extra mile for Comfort Socks is so many ways. Every Monday, upon entering the room for the Advent lunch, you were greeted by a huge Christmas Tree adorned with Socks. The Sunset Beach Community Church congregation brought socks every Monday as part of their admission to the luncheon. It was my great honor to be invited to speak to the congregation about Comfort Socks, and I was welcomed with a brotherly love that touched my heart and spirit.

Thank you Sunset Beach Community Church, for stepping forward to make a difference. 375 pairs of socks will warm the feet and comfort the hearts of those misplaced and lost.

Yuma Podiatrist Talks about the Importance of Socks for Homeless

Here is an article that appeared in the Yuma Times on Dec 9, 2009.
Eventhough this doctor is collecting socks for a mission in his city (Yuma, Arizona) the importance of new socks for homeless people is just as real each and every day. Please help Comfort Socks provide new socks to homeless shelters all across our nation.

Dr. Stanton Cohen, a podiatrist, is concerned about keeping
people's feet warm during the winter season. So, he's collecting new
socks to donate to Crossroads Mission (Yuma, AZ).
"Socks are an important piece of clothing at this time of year,
especially for the homeless," he said. "Socks can help prevent foot
problems by keeping the skin clean and dry."
Cohen has been conducting his sock drive for more than ten years,
and is asking the public to bring socks of all sizes for men, women,
children and infants to his practice, 1743 W. 24th St.
He will place the donated socks on a "sock tree" at his office.....

"We collect all types of socks for people of all ages, including infants,
because down at the mission, there are families in need. Being a foot
doctor, I realize how important it is to your keep your feet warm and
protected, especially in cold weather."
Cohen said Yuma can be dangerous, even if it rarely gets below
freezing.
"In cold weather, people with poor circulation can get frostbite, even in
Yuma, if their feet are wet and they are outside sleeping. Go to the
tent city at the river and see how many are living down there without
proper anything. So anything we can do to help these people,
especially this time of year when our thoughts turn to our fellow
human beings, is important."
Cohen said many people don't donate socks and underwear.
"A lot of people donate used clothes, but people rarely donate socks
because they normally wear them until they have holes in them. It is
good for a person's self-worth when they get new socks instead of
used socks. They normally don't get socks through the normal
channels."
Cohen said he enjoys providing the socks to people he may never
meet.
"I have a philosophy about charity. The best charity is when you give
to somebody and they don't know it's from you, so you don't feel
superior and they don't feel indebted to you because you gave them
something, which is why I give them to the mission to be distributed
anonymously."
